Introduction Into Poultry Farming Business

Poultry farming business is one of the lucrative offline business you can run in Nigeria successfully. It involves the rearing and marketing of poultry produce and products. This produce are the birds(fowls), eggs and even their faeces while the products are the feed, poultry equipment and poultry housing materials.
Now, as I said earlier, this business is a very lucrative business. Why did I say so? This is because no matter the kind of work you do, there is always room for you in this business.
If you are a retiree, you can venture fully into this business to make extra money to add to your pension (that's if the government pays you anyway), if you are a graduate with no job, this is cool business for you as the startup capital is affordable. If you are an undergraduate and you are looking for ways to earn extra cash excluding the stipends your parents do give to you, then this is an opportunity. If you are an individual with no job nor educational qualification looking for how to make money, the door to this business is open for you.

Another reason this business is lucrative is the fact that you are dealing with food. Nigeria is a country made of a hungry population. People can't do without food and a country with about 170 million individuals, the  demand for food will  always be there. Remember, in business, the higher the demand, the lesser the supply and the higher the profit.

The third reason why it is lucrative to venture into this business is the rate at which fowls lay eggs. A properly fed bird will lay over 300 eggs in one year. If you have 400-500 birds, it means you will be producing 300-400 eggs per day. It takes about 21 days for the birds to hatch it's eggs, that means if you are into hatchery, you will be having new stock every 21 days, it takes the chick 12-20 weeks to mature for market. This also entails that every 3-5 months, you will have new stock of broilers for sale. Though, there is a way you can never run out of stock for new broilers. This we will be discussing in our subsequent post.

Having noted that this business is a lucrative business, we shall be taking a look at the various areas to invest in this business. There are many areas of investment in this business, but we will be looking into five areas.

Various Areas To Invest In Poultry Business
1. Broilers Breeding: This refers to the rearing of birds for the purpose of meat production. This birds depending on the weight can be sold for over N2500 to the final consumers. The birds can also be prepared and sold frozen in the market and stores. The last time I checked, a lap of chicken was sold at N300.
This is a profitable business as most people no longer consume red meat due to the health implication but rather choose to consume white meat and chicken is a good source of it.

2. Egg production: Do you know that medical doctors advice you take at least one egg in a day? Egg is a highly nutritious food rich in protein. This is why egg consumption is high. If you are very hungry and consume a cooked egg, it will be able to sustain you to a very reasonable extent.
Now back to business, egg is always in demand in the market. The demand has also increased especially now that there is a ban on the importation of poultry produce.
A crate of egg sells for N700-N750 in some market in Nigeria and even higher in some cases.
So if you can produce 300 eggs in a day, you will be making good amount of money before the month runs out.

3.Hatchery Business(Chick Production): Hatchery business is a very good poultry niche. Do you know that many people are going into poultry business everyday? Do you also know that if you want to move into broiler breeding or egg production, you need newly hatched chick to start with?
Well, new chicks is  very important in the poultry business. A chick sells between N170-N250 in some part of the country. So you can make enough money with this business.

4. Egg distribution and supply: Egg distribution involves buying eggs from poultry farm and supplying in wholesale quantity to retail outlets, restaurants, hawkers e.t.c. Now, one interesting thing about this business is that you don't need to own a farm to start making money to start making money from this niche. All you need is to get buyers and farmer(s) which is not difficult to get as your customers are always out there. Another challenge is the issue of transportation which can be resolved by making use of public transport at the beginning and can go ahead to get your supply van as your business grows.
Another interesting thing about this business is that you can start with as low as N50,000. That sound unbelievable, right? Watch out for my post on how to start a successful egg distribution in Nigeria and make money from it.

5. Poultry feed: This involves producing feeds for other poultry farmers. Poultry feeds are always in demand by poultry farmers and they will buy from you if your prize is good. You can choose to mix the feed by yourself if you know how to or buy already mixed ones and supplying to the farmers.

There are other areas which onecan invest in poultry business such as poultry equipment, housing among others.
Now, you may not need to invest in five areas at once, you may start with one or two and latter start with the other ones as your business grows.
